A Game of Thrones - Appendix and Map
Show Notes

In this episode, we go through the appendix and map of A Game of Thrones and figure out which way is north. This is a bit of a slow episode, especially since we have been recording these in the morning. Can you guess which one of us is more of a morning person?

*FYI, the Lannisters descend from Lann the Clever not Lann the Cleaver. My bad on the mispronounciation.

Mentioned in this episode: How Eddard became Ned

I came upon this explanation in Cast of Thrones Episode 1 Redux - Winter is Coming.

The following is quoted directly from the show notes of aforementioned episode.

"My understanding of the Ned/Eddard connection is the following:

We know in English when to use “a” vs. “an”: A book. An apple.

I believe that at one point, “my” and “mine” had a similar usage: My father. My mother. Mine uncle. Mine aunt. Mine host. (Lots of references in Shakespeare and Chaucer.)

Somehow, “mine” was replaced by “my”, with some words retaining the “n” sound or dropping it, depending on whether you misunderstood where the phrase was divided.

So, “nuncle” was also said. And we know that [certain characters] use “nuncle” in the series to refer to their favorite uncles.

For terms of endearment, Mine [Eddard] and Mine Ann became “Ned” and “Nan”, respectively."
